Apple's Mini DisplayPort has been the butt of a few jokes since its introduction in 2008. It may soon become more ubiquitous, however, as the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) announced Tuesday that Mini DisplayPort (also known as mDP) is officially becoming part of the current DisplayPort standard.

Mini DisplayPort is an Apple-designed miniature version of the VESA-approved DisplayPort, which fully supports the protocol while offering a more compact connector. Apple first started rolling out mDP-compatible computers in the fall of 2008 with its notebook revision, and has since been adding it to more of the company's machines. DisplayPort offers several advantages over older standards, and Mini DisplayPort adds a compact form factor—helpful for use in computers where space-savings is important.
